The club had four squads travel to Twizel for the National Club Championships. The crews competed well across the week against some very strong competition. The Twizel weather gods were playing nice and except for Friday afternoon where strong winds delayed the first day of finals by three hours.
In the Novice women’s grade the Avon ‘Rowers to Rio’ crew dominated in both the coxed eights and fours. The Wellington women raced well in the eight, but unfortunately placed just outside of the medals finishing in fourth. Their top coxed four made the final, placing seventh – a great achievement considering the lack of training time in the smaller boats!
The Novice men’s crew competed well during the week in the eights, coxed fours and double scull events, comfortably making it through to the finals. Hopes were high, but due to circumstances outside their control, they were forced to scratch from all finals. We hope the guys keep their spirits high and come back to finish the job next year!
The Club women competed in both Club and Senior events, and did well against the crews who had significantly more water time. The Club quad and coxed four missed qualifying for the finals being eliminated from the semifinal and repechage respectively. The Senior quad made the final despite a snapped oar in the heats, and a gate popping open in the repechage. The Senior coxless four finished the final in fifth. In the Club eight the crew made it to the final and finished in eighth.
The Club men were represented by the under-19 ex-Onslow boys and Paul Moreno. Paul made the semifinals of both the Club and Senior single events, but unfortunately failed to quality for any finals. The under-19 boys made it through to the semifinals of the Club coxed four, and the finals of the Club quad. Jamie had a great showing in the Club single making it through to the final in a huge field of 48 scullers. The under-19 double of Jamie Hunter and Josh Liua’ana went all the way snatching gold. Thomas Butt and Alex Sele finished sixth in the same final which was a great achievement for the boys and their coach, Michele Munro.
The Wellington rowers representing RPC's also performed extremely well with Joe Wright, Tufi Sele, Anna Reymer (all with Central RPC) and Tobias Wehr-Candler (Waikato RPC) all medalling in various events.
