Health and Safety

East West Ferry

All crews: due to some recent situations, there is no stopping, slowing down, or turning in front of the East West ferry exit by Waterloo Quay.  The ferry gets up to speed very quickly and if it must move or stop quickly it puts both the rowers and the ferry passengers at risk.  We are very keen to limit further issues.

Turning, should you be coming from Te Papa course should occur inside the wharf space by the Police launch (the Waterloo Quay wharf.) When traveling the course down from the light pole to town, you need to stop in line with the short wharf and not continue into the no stopping and turning zone.

This applies to accompanied and unaccompanied crews.  If you have any questions please speak with your coach, club captain, or safety officer.

We are confirming a map with the Harbor master to illustrate this.  Once available, the maps will be distributed and will be laminated and put up on the safety wall.

Thanks everyone.

Changing rooms and toilets

We recognise that the current gendered changing room and toilet arrangements may not work for all members.  While this is something we plan to improve on with future renovations of the boathouse we want to make sure all our members have access to facilities they are comfortable using.  We are able to provide access to the upstairs toilets in the function centre for anyone who would be more comfortable using these.  Please get in touch with any of the board or committee members, or email the secretary@wellingtonrowing.org.nz to arrange access.

President's Message

Dear Members,

As we launch into another busy and most promising rowing season, I hope that you have had the opportunity to read the WRC Annual report 2022/23 (see website) to reflect on the achievements of the past 12 months.  The Club is in a good position after rebounding back from the impact of covid, and I can assure you that the Club is held in high regard across NZ for our results on the water and our approach in general operations. I only ask this year for more favourable weather to allow us all greater time on the water.

For this coming season we welcome our new Club Captain (Paul Smart), Secretary (Sarah Cutten), Treasurer (Ange Rogers) and Board member (Caroline Dumas), and we give our heartfelt thanks to our retiring Club Captain (Allan Mills), Secretary (Tracey Bates) and Treasurer (Max Newton).

To help set the season up well from the start I was very pleased at the AGM to announce the donation of a new Coxless Four boat to the fleet from Russell Black, one of our alumni members.  We are also actively considering what other boats we will be adding to the fleet this year.  At the AGM we also unveiled our new Safety video, which not only outlines the key safety messages but also introduces some of our wonderful members to the wider world.  This is a brilliant video, and I urge you to seek it out on the website to check out the acting talent, as it sets a new standard for all other clubs across the country.  We have also just completed a very successful Learn to Row program with 40 participants, and we welcome those participants who are joining the club.  I am also very pleased to see that our efforts to bring more coaches into the Club is bearing fruit, and the impact of additional coaches is already being felt.

A special thanks to Deidre Burke, Jo-Anne Stoakes, and Alan Mills for exceptional catering.

We are here to help you and the other rowers in your squads to become the very best rower you seek to be, so bring on the year ahead!!

Interesting in helping out or joining the committee? And/or do you have a special skill you think would benefit the club?

Please get in touch with clubcaptain@wellingtonrowing.org.nz

Housekeeping

Two short and simple requests for all members:

  • Please be mindful of the boathouse lock- it is fragile.  Don’t leave it with the deadbolt out and have it bang against the door jam.  Alternatively latch the door open at the back hook that attaches to the lockers.
  • The club and schools are completing an inventory of megaphones, cox boxes, and batteries. Should you have any of these at home that your coach is unaware of, could you please bring them back to the club at your convenience.
