WRC's newest Life Member: Huw Mitchell

We would like to recognise the contribution of Huw Mitchell to Wellington Rowing Club by making Huw Mitchell a Wellington Rowing Club Life Member.

Huw has been involved in rowing for many years, firstly at College, University and then as a Club rower in the UK.

When he emigrated to New Zealand, Huw reengaged with rowing and joined the Wellington Rowing Club Masters squad in 2010. He has raced every nationals regatta since over the past 10 years with great success. He is the Masters 8+ men’s 7 seat, and is an extremely capable bow sweep oar rower.

Not only is Huw proficient on the water but he has also been very active the Club off the water. He has been a member of the committee for nearly the whole time he has rowed for WRC.

Not one to shy away from responsibility, Huw generously put his hand up to act as Treasurer during the period of the Club house earthquake strengthening. The Club needed careful guidance through this time with the increased financial pressure. He ensured we remained solvent, didn’t over commit to unnecessary expenditure and kept the accounts squeaky clean.

Huw has also been  a huge help throughout the preservation work of the exterior of the Club and was seen many times up the scaffolding taking careful note of both the extent of the rot and the workmanship done to replace it. Knowing that the finances were well managed gave us the confidence to complete to this last stage of the works. Only the erg room and function room floor to go!

Huw joined the WRC board in 2019. He stepped up to the role of President after the sad passing of the then President Samantha Seath who we all greatly miss. As President Huw has had to deal with the changing world of Covid and has done so with clear decision making and direction.

Huw has coached Club Novice women and Corporate crews and is one of the “long in the tooth” Masters that are relied on to make things happen. We have been very lucky to have Huw Mitchell as a member of Wellington Rowing Club. He is generous with his time and has helped to make WRC what it is today.

Huw has recently decided to head down to live in Nelson. We are going to miss him, his commitment and skill at 7 seat.

Life Membership is not awarded lightly. It is reserved for above and beyond contribution to the success and sustainability of our fantastic club. We believe that Huw Mitchell is a very worthy member of our club whose contribution fits with the ethos for Life Membership.
