Congratulations to Warrick Fowlie on being granted life membership of the Wellington Rowing Club.
Warrick joined the club in 2000 when his daughter started rowing – he put his hand up to help coach her novice squad despite the fact that he knew little about the sport.
Since then he has never looked back, regularly coaching crews to Maadi and NZ Club Championship level. Two of our current NZ reps, Tobias Wehr-Candler and Tufi Sele, are protégés of Warrick.
But it is not only his coaching that his life membership recognises. Warrick is one of the hardest workers that the Wellington Rowing club has seen for a while – much of the maintenance work done around the shed in recent years has been done by Warrick.
He has quietly got on with many things like painting the oars, repairing coach boat leaks, tidying the changing rooms, colour coding oars, painting the floor, towing coach boats to/from the maintenance workshop … you name it he has probably done it!
Thank you for all your help and good work, Warrick.
The Wellington Rowing Club Corporate Rowing Regatta was held in good conditions along the Petone Waterfront.
Everyone had a great time. The Police crew beat off last years winners Gen-i to take top honors this time around, while Opus had a good all-round performance.
Great work everyone!

Congratulations to Tufi Sele, and Anna Reymer for their selection in the NZ squad.
Tufi has been selected in the U23 Coxed Four, and will join former Onslow rower and world champion, Tobias Wehr-Candler, at the U23 World Championships in Belarus during July.
Anna has been selected for the Women's Elite Double Scull. The selection caps off an excellent season for Anna, who won 3 national elite titles at the NZ rowing championships recently.
Best of luck to both of them!
Last week a large squad of Wellington rowers descended on Lake Karapiro in Hamilton for the 2010 New Zealand Rowing Championships.
The group consisted of the women's and men's senior crews, a women's novice squad, and the St Mary's College rowing squad. Sadly the St Mary's crew decided to leave the regatta early because of a tragic event that had occurred back in Wellington.
The weather was exceptional all week. The Wellington crews went well in the their heats and repercharges.
In the end the senior men's squad made finals in the club/senior 8+, club 4+, and senior 4-. The senior women's squad made it through to the senior 8+ final, and the novice women's squad made the novice 4+ and 8+ final.
Great results by the men's squad followed in the club 8+ and 4+. It was reported that not since 1969 had a Wellington crew won a non-novice men's 8+ race at a New Zealand championship regatta. That all changed on Saturday when the men's crew, stroked by Sam Anderson, finally won the title for Wellington Rowing Club.
The crew consisted of (from cox) Erin Hill, Sam Anderson, Dougal McDuff, Simon Woodfine, Al Wright, Sam McCarthy, Matt Short, Mark Brocklehurst, Michael Grace.
Sam Anderson also stroked the club 4+, and joined Erin Hill (cox), Dougal McDuff, Simon Woodfine, and Al Wright, to win a close silver medal.
The novice women's 4+ crew were unlucky to miss out on a medal, finishing 4th in their final.
Great work from all crews!
